Classes, Events & Field Trips

Comic Kids believes that a full art education means that children are not only creating art but also learning about it by doing art-related events and going on field trips to museums and exhibitions. We work with schools non-profits to help facilitate, organize, and sponsor art-related events, specialty art classes and field trips to expose underserved children and adults to the wide world of art. Here are some of the past events our non-profit partners have experienced with Comic Kids.

ILLULMINATE CORAL GABLES

Illuminate Coral Gables was an outdoor art exhibition in downtown Coral Gables on view in the spring of 2020. The children participated in a night-time walking tour of art projects incorporating video projections, sculpture and installations by local, national, and international artists. The children created an art project that was displayed in a storefront on Miracle Mile entitled "Face Sky". Bags of art supplies including sketchbooks, colored pencils, markers and art pens were donated by the community.

THE WOW CENTER

In working with communities of physically & developmentally challenged individuals, Comic Kids has started broadening our standard programming of comic, cartoon & book illustration to encourage more children & adults in art. When working in children's hospitals, we noticed gripping thin pencils and markers can be challenging for certain children due to the physical parameters in which they are working. No one should be unable to take an art class because they can not hold a pencil. Comic Kids has consulted with art therapists to find accessible materials to use in our classes, particularly materials that are easier to grip & use:

Jumbo crayons, pencils & markers
Foam grips for thin pencils & markers
Finger & Egg crayons
Dot markers

The Wow Center in Miami is an amazing facility that helps adults with developmental challenges have a sense of community by providing them with care, classes and wonderful opportunities that increase their quality of life. We tailored a curriculum of art classes based on the ages of the individuals and materials that would be easy to work with and fun for them.

Dot markers were the first choice. We then created a curriculum around the materials, including two leading figures in contemporary art. First, the 2023 top-selling female artist, 95 year old Yayoi Kusama whose paintings, sculptures and "Infinity Rooms" often incorporate dots. We also introduced another leading contemporary figure, British artist Damien Hirst, most easily recognized for his mandalas & dot paintings. The individuals colored three unique projects, a coloring page of Kusama's Flower Sculpture, a butterfly Mandala based on Hirst's art and a free-form dot painting based on Hirst's "Currency Series." The adults learned about who the artists are, what they are famous for, saw examples of their artworks, and were then able to recreate the art in their own creative way. See for yourselves, the results were amazing!

WYNWOOD WALLS

Wynwood Walls is one Miami's Top Five visits on Trip Advisor and it's no question why! Over 50 dazzling, cutting-edge murals were created by respected street artists from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States in an expansive collection of colorful artworks displayed on walls outside in the Wynwood arts district. In the summer of 2021, Comic Kids brought groups of children from non-profit organizations to the walls. They were given a guided walking tour as well as an art class on site, art supplies and a pizza lunch by Joey's. It was an unforgettable experience for them to learn about the different styles of murals up-close while also creating art themselves.

VAN GOGH IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

The Van Gogh Exhibit was an immersive exhibition at the Olympia Theater in MIami which contained information on more than 300 of Vincent Van Gogh’s greatest works. Floor-to-ceiling digital projections provided a backdrop for the children to walk through the most notable artworks by the artist. They experienced the paintings and sketches by the artist and visited additional spaces dedicated to learning about the artist’s life, his artworks and the techniques. The field trip ended with an unforgettable virtual reality experience for the kids.

THE LOWE ART MUSEUM

The Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus is an art museum built in 1952 and comprising more than 19,250 objects, representing more than 5,000 years of human creativity on every inhabited continent. Children from Title 1 schools and non-profits will be given a docented walking tour of the Lowe Museum by volunteers, staff and members of The Beaux Arts Organization from their "Hands On!" committee, chaired by Comic Kids Founder Kat Barrow-Horth. In addition to learning about the artworks in the Lowe Museum, the children will be able to take an art class and recreate an artwork in the museum that they can later take home with them. This field trip will not only be able to expose the children to so many years of art history in one place but it will also be an exciting experience for them to be on campus at The University of Miami.
